Dikhen amen! See us!
Description
Young Romnja (plural female for Roma) pose with a banner of the Amaro Drom project "Dikhen amen! See us!" for a group photo. The photo was taken in August 2016 at the youth encounter "Dikh angle! Looking forward!", which took place in Berlin from 2015 to 2017. On the occasion of the Genocide Remembrance Day on August 2, the participants* dealt with the history of the persecution and genocide of the Sinti*zze and Rom*nja during National Socialism in workshops. They learned about the resistance and the civil rights movement of the Rom*nja and Sinti*zze and visited memorial events. The picture does not show faces. Making oneself publicly visible as a Rom*ni or Sinto*Sintizza carries the risk of becoming a victim of discrimination, hate comments and violence. Many young Rom*nja and Sinti*zze have had this experience and decide against publishing their pictures. In the youth association Amaro Drom, young Rom*nja and Sinti*zze have been working together with young non-Rom*nja and non-Sinti*zze for social participation and against racism since 2006. Many of them have a migration history. Their parents fled to Germany during the Balkan wars or came to Germany as so-called "guest workers". Others are Sinti*zze. They have been a part of German society for more than 600 years. There are also Rom*nja whose ancestors immigrated to Germany 150 years ago. Making Rom*nja and Sinti*zze visible in their diversity and as a natural part of society is one of the goals of Amaro Drom.
