European Holocaust Remembrance Day for Sinti and Roma 2019
Description
A participant of the youth encounter "Dikh He Na Bister - Roma Genocide Remembrance Initiative" on Holocaust Remembrance Day August 2, 2019 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial site. As part of the youth encounter "Dikh He Na Bister" (Romanes for "Look and do not forget"), several hundred young people take part in the August 2 commemoration every year. August 2 is the European Holocaust Remembrance Day for Sinti and Roma (gender-sensitive Sinti*ze and Rom*nja). On the night of August 2 to 3, 1944, the camp in which Sinti*zze and Rom*nja were imprisoned was liquidated in Auschwitz-Birkenau. After all prisoners who were considered fit for work were deported to Germany for forced labor, SS members murdered the 4200-4300 remaining Rom*nja and Sinti*zze in gas chambers during the night of August 3, 1944 - among them mainly women, children and elderly people.* In total, 90% of the European Rom*nja were murdered during National Socialism (approx. 500,000 people). Every year, the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the Polish Roma Association, in cooperation with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, commemorate the persecution and genocide of the Sinti*zze and Rom*nja during National Socialism.
